Mephisto Men's Match Walking Shoes - Comfortable & Supportive for Walking, Travel & Daily Wear

I’ve worn Mephisto shoes for about 30 years. I have had several pair of this particular design over the years. I also own a few pair of their boots (which are extremely long lasting and hands-down the most comfortable things I’ve ever put on my feet).My first few pair of this shoe were made in France. They were perfect. From day one they fit perfectly. They performed flawlessly for years and I never gave a second thought to the cost. I knew they would last long time and be comfortable the entire time, so it felt like a fair deal.Then a few years ago I bought a pair online because I couldn’t find my size in a local store. I was surprised to receive a pair of shoes that were made in Portugal. Surprised and skeptical…and as it turned out, appropriately so. That pair didn’t last like my previous ones had. And they weren’t like walking on a cloud. Not even close. So, after some time I talked myself into believing they were knock-offs (I didn’t buy that pair on Amazon. They were from an online auction site). Maybe they were, maybe not, but they were certainly different from all other Mephisto shoes I’d ever had.Now this pair. First, I will say this- the darker brown color is SO MUCH NICER LOOKING than the standard tan color. Thank you, Mephisto for finally making this shoe in the darker brown!These are comfortable shoes. They fit well; they don’t cause blisters, etc. But, there’s something that’s different about these shoes from the pair that were made in France. They still lack the ‘walking on a cloud’ level of comfort.Someone else mentioned the weight of these shoes. I agree- they are much lighter than the genuine, French-made shoes. Idk if that’s a result of different materials or a different amount of certain materials or what, but I do know this is the last pair of Mephisto shoes I’ll be buying at this price point.I have to assume the cost of producing these shoes has decreased significantly since they’re no longer made in France. The labor cost alone is probably less than half what it was in the past. And if the quality and/or quantity of materials is lower then so too are the associated costs. For those reasons the cost of these shoes should be lower.It’s too bad. I feel like I’m losing a friend by deciding to not buy Mephisto shoes anymore. But it just feels like I’m being overcharged.MOVE MANUFACTURING BACK TO FRANCE!!These shoes fit, they’re comfortable and wear extremely well. They are expensive but I feel they are worth it.Sizing is kind of weird as Mephisto's EU size conversion to US sizes is a whole size off by many other brands. Going by EU sizing, the length is about right bordering on slightly smaller than the label. Width wise is great, except of the toe box. The toe box is extremely narrow and your small toe will be cramped against the side. If you size up half EU size, it think it might work but you might experience heel slippage depending on your foot shape. Sizing up EU size by half size is sizing down half size in typical US sizes (since Mephisto's conversion is different). I wonder if the people saying it ran large might be going off their typical US size.Comfort: These are extremely comfortable shoes if it fits you. Only potential problem would be overheating as it is made of thick, full grain leather. No break in time needed.Quality: It is made of quality material and you can easily tell. They look much better in person than in pictures in my opinion.Price: It is extremely expensive for a pair of "sneakers" but they can be resoled and refreshed by Mephisto. From what I have heard about this process, it will come back looking pretty much new, espeically since the top is made of full grain leather. If you break down the down over time, it might actaully become cheaper than buying multiple cheaper shoes over the years. So if you are the type of person that likes to wear the same shoes and would just buy the same model again when the time comes, this might be for you (as long as it fits your feet).As has often been my experience when purchasing shoes, the size that fits is unpredictable. Such was the case with this shoe. It was my first time purchasing this shoe. I've wanted a pair for quite some time and I was pleasantly surprised to see it discounted over 40% a little while ago and decided that it was now or never. I ordered size 10. It was immediately apparent that my size in this model was actually a half-size lower, so I immediately requested an exchange. Amazon makes this easy and, even though the price had gone up substantially, I wasn't charged the difference. I received size 9 1/2 a couple of days ago and immediately started wearing them. The fit is perfect and the experience I've had thus far exceeds my expectations. They are comfortable yet afford me with exceptional support. I've read other reviews that describe this shoe as being on the heavy side. Possibly, however I will say that, in my opinion, any shoe that affords the degree of comfort and support this one does will have what I would term a "substantial presence." I do not find it to be excessively heavy and my feet do not fatigue with extended wear. Although I've only had it for a couple of days, I can already envision this shoe to be a favorite. I almost wish I'd purchased 2 pair at the price I paid. I'd recommend this shoe to anyone wishing an upscale look that offers great support and comfort. I watched the price fluctuate in my shopping cart under "Saved for Later" for several months before I finally went for it. I've only seen it offered lower once (27 cents), so I bought as close to the bottom as possible in my opinion. Possibly you can do as well if you're patient.Superbe chaussure.
